General Description

Copely Developments’ PVC Safestrip is already a market leader, both at home and overseas. Our original design and manufacturing method, which was protected by Patent No. 1604436 has seen continuous development over the last 20 years and many thousands of tonnes have been sold to a wide variety of industries. PVC Safestrip is made in a high quality, low toxic, Cadmium free PVC material offering extremely good clarity and consistency of colour tint and dimensional tolerances.

PVC Safestrip is used for internal and external thermal partitions, for a barrier against fumes, dust or flying insects, birds etc. It is used for reduction of noise levels between production areas in factories. Quiet areas, for example areas for Quality Inspection in an otherwise noisy environment.

Special grades of Safestrip are used in "Welding Curtain". These grades are generally coloured Green with reduction of harmful UV light of 99%.

PVC Safestrip will resist the continual passage of vehicular traffic and has proved to be the Number One choice of specifiers where abrasion resistance is required. A "Buffer" quality of Safestrip is available for extreme conditions, where "Standard" material has limited life.

Special qualities are available for low temperature applications "Coldstore Safestrip" and for deep freeze requirements our "Super Polar Grade" is available.

Notes

a) 'CS' Standard quality - suitable for temperatures down to around 0°. The material has softness of BS. 49 and Shore 73 hardness. Coldflex temperature @ -20°C, cold bend temperature @ -40°C.

b) 'CF' Coldstore quality - suitable for lower temperature environments. The material has softness BS. 72 and Shore 61 hardness. Coldflex temperature @ -33°C, cold bend temperature @ -65°C.

c) We also produce against special order, our SCF-Super Polar Grade. The material has softness BS. 81 and Shore 57 hardness. Coldflex temperature @ -58°C, cold bend temperature @ -70°C.

Special Note

Please note that the 'Coldflex' temperature means the temperature at which the material becomes hard and will not break, and the 'cold bend' temperature is the temperature at which the material will break if flexed. These temperature ratings are calculated against British Standards test methods and are conducted under laboratory controlled conditions.

Environmental conditions, amount of traffic and the degree of abrasion will affect the longevity of "Safestrip" in use, for example, rough pallets and sharp objects will form cuts on the surface and reduce effective life. Ice build up, wind chill effect and relatively high impact will also reduce effective life.

Fire Performance of PVC Safestrip Material

Safestrip material has an oxygen index value of 23-24%. This value represents the percentage of oxygen in a controlled oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere that is required to maintain combustion.

The fact that a "normal" atmosphere will contain approximately 21% oxygen means that PVC Safestrip can be considered effectively as 'SELF EXTINGUISHING'.

Note:

As with many materials, PVC on burning will give off dense smoke and toxic fumes such as hydrochloric acid and carbon monoxide. One must also consider the "Chimney Effect" of vertical burning and of course the close proximity of more combustible materials such as wood that have a lower oxygen index and which would promote fire in the area of PVC Safestrip. PVC must be considered a very safe material and is currently used in many forms in building, for example "Window Frames" and should be judged in relation to other materials when assessment of fire resistance is considered.

Handling and Storage

There are no transport or storage hazards, but due care should be taken while the ROLLS OF "SAFESTRIP" ARE IN COILED FORM NOT to store in wet or on damp floors or areas of high humidity. Keep away from heat or direct sunlight. These precautions do not apply once the strip is hanging in situ. See storage description (as diagram).
