Current edition: Engineering & Technical Support

Autumn 2002

South Africa. New Technology Transfer and License Agreement

A five year agreement, was signed between DPI Plastics (Pty) Limited and ourselves on 15th July 2002, following several months of negotiation. The agreement includes the whole of the African continent including the Indian Ocean Islands, but excluding Egypt, Libya, Algeria and Morocco.

The following Copely Brands will either be manufactured in South Africa or sourced from our Leicester base: Codeflex; Coplexel; Aquavend; Eurolon; Safestrip. The internationally recognised Copely CD logo will also feature as appropriate.

DPI Plastics are a volume manufacturer of Rigid UPVC pipe, exceeding 30,000 tonnes per annum, with distribution facilities throughout South Africa and the licensed territories.

DPI’s parent Company is Sasol, one of South Africa's largest corporations, providing employment for more than 200,000 people directly or indirectly. Copely Developments Ltd are proud to be selected to participate in this important Hose manufacturing project.

In addition to the hose manufacturing technology transfer, Copely will provide a facility for hose recycling and waste recovery. A number of Copely designed plants are operating successfully in various parts of the world, including Australia, Mexico, Sweden and Italy. The equipment enhances manufacturing efficiencies and contributes to the environment, through reduction of landfill and incineration of waste materials.

With increasing pressure on manufacturing margins, coupled with rising feedstock prices processors have difficulty in passing on, it is vital that material efficiencies are maximised. We therefore envisage greater interest in our automated recycling plants which are now available with PLC control

Quality Management

A message from Robert Brooks - Quality Manager.

‘We received our six monthly BSI ISO 9002 audit recently and am pleased to report the most satisfactory audit to date! I wish to thank all staff for their support and level of quality awareness. We are in the transitional process and working towards assessment to ISO 9001/2000 next year and it is vital that we remain alert to the requirements and advantages of this standard and ultimately use ISO 9001 as a management tool’.

And from our Managing Director - Brian Copely.

‘A pre-requisite of our growing involvement in the development of technical tubes and hoses for critical applications in Aerospace, Medical, Water Treatment and Undersea Exploration, is that we consistently maintain product quality to a very high level indeed. This consistency is now rewarded by higher value added sales and very satisfied customers - fully justifying the high development costs incurred.

As associate members of BAREMA - British Anaesthetic & Respiratory Equipment Manufacturers Association, we have been privileged to provide advice for the National Health Service concerning medical gas hoses, a number of which are the result of Copely technology, design and manufacturing expertise’.

Training

Congratulations to Robert Brooks, our Quality Manager, who has successfully completed the BSI residential course - ‘ISO 9000:2000 Series Auditor Transition Course for Quality Professionals’. This enables Robert to internally audit the Company in preparation for our change to BS-EN-ISO-9001 early next year.
