This will ultimately enhance quality and service to our customers. It is also my intention to develop improved QA lines of communication with both customers and suppliers alike and look forward to meeting our key contacts both on and off site in the coming months."
We are confident that Ian's contribution will be quickly appreciated by all that have business with him.

Do You Know?

What connection did Copely Developments have with Rutherford Laboratories, Harwell, BirminghamUniversity and the International CERN Project and Space Research?

Answer below

25 years Service Awards

Doesn't time fly! Several employees recently completed 25 years service with the Company, making a total of fifteen to date. This indeed demonstrates the high level of loyalty and stability shown by 'Team Copely' staff from all departments - a true reflection of the friendly working environment that all employees have become accustomed to.

This team spirit exudes throughout the factory and is vital for the wellbeing of our business and our drive to remain competitive in the United Kingdom and beyond. Picture left, is our most recent 25 year service award to Mr Prabhu Lal Chotaliya, following the presentation by Mr Steve Walton in October 2005. Pictured right are, from left to right,

Training - News & Views
Following our commitment to the EEC part funded 'Learning Works' training initiative some six years ago, which highlighted the importance of training for all employees, significant strides have been made by the Company in this area. Many employees now proactively seek work enhancing training, which is generally sponsored by the Company. Changes in government legislation in the area of Health & Safety for example, have required staff to be trained and fully conversant with latest law and best practice. New equipment, whether this be manufacturing plant in the factory, computers, or software in accounts programmes, creates a real need for training to enable the Company to improve its efficiency levels and obtain the best return on its investment.

Hearty Congratulations to the following staff who have successfully completed recent training courses:

Annalisa Rorison - ILM Diploma in Management.

Chris Cannon - Computer course - Word & Excel.

Chris Hodson - Computer course - Word & Excel.

Paul Weston - Computer course - Word & Excel.

Doug Stafford - Auto CAD Training.

Ian Neilson - BSI Internal Auditing.

Steve Walton - NEBOSH. - National Examination Board for Occupational Safety and Health.

Sophie Adcock - Year 1 EAL Adv Dip in Engineering & Tech Elec/Electronic Pathway Yr 1 Pass in all modules.

Do You Know? Here is the answer!

During 1987, Rutherford Appleton Laboratories at The United Kingdom
Atomic Energy Research establishment, Harwell, were seeking volume supplies of a complex fire resistant profile assembly in 11 metre straight lengths and manufactured to critical dimensional limits. Following delivery, they had to graphite coat the inner surfaces and insert electronic components, prior to onward delivery to Switzerland for use on the CERN underground Project, funded by many countries around the world. This project is connected to space research and the separation and analysis of atom particles. A spin off from this research has been the successful development of such things as Body Scanners, in the medical sector and Internet and mobile communications as we know them today. The profiles had to fit within an outer 'jacket' or sleeve, which then had to be fitted within a further containment sleeve - all made by Copely Developments Ltd! All profiles had to be easily removed for adjustment and maintenance. We developed an extrusion line exclusively for this project, which was also used by The department of space research at The University of Padua in Italy. On successful completion of the project, we received public recognition within technical journals covering the project both at home and overseas! The CERN Project continues to this day!

British Aerospace Military Strike Aircraft Typhoon and the Copely Connection.

BAE Systems Typhoon. Pictures above are aircraft of the Flight Test Development Fleet based at Warton Aerodrome, Lancashire and are by courtesy of BAE Systems.

BAE Systems, formerly known as BAe, has been supplied directly or indirectly by the Company for more than 25 years, following development of flexible tubes for military aircraft in the mid seventies. Our products are used as initial equipment on specific aircraft or for maintenance within the factories. We also provided assistance during government Offset technology trade missions to the Middle East during 1994 and 1995.

Copely Developments Ltd were originally approached by British Aerospace (BAe) when seeking a thermoplastic alternative to Titanium tubes, for use in safety critical applications on board the Tornado, Jaguar and Harrier strike aircraft, the former ones being in the final stages of development, prior to delivery to the RAF and other NATO Air Forces. Polyester Elastomer tubes were formulated, which met the basic technical criteria laid down, but alone did not provide adequate resistance to flame, a critical element in Aerospace safety. Following a prolonged period of extrusion trials, we successfully overcame this obstacle by judicious blending of suitable additives to the base material. The final blended material also presented a challenge for continuous extrusion into tubes, and special extrusion techniques had to be adopted in order to achieve consistency and dimensional accuracy. This product was also selected for use on the latest state of the art Eurofighter military aircraft, now known as the Typhoon, which has been in the process of technical development for many years.
