Copely Developments involvement with the CERN Project

During 1987, Rutherford Appleton Laboratories at The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Research establishment, Harwell, were seeking volume supplies of a complex fire resistant profile assembly in 11 metre straight lengths and manufactured to critical dimensional limits. Following delivery, they had to graphite coat the inner surfaces and insert electronic components, prior to onward delivery to Switzerland for use on the CERN underground Project , funded by many countries around the world. This project is connected to space research and the separation and analysis of atom particles. A spin off from this research has been the successful development of such things as Body Scanners, in the medical sector and Internet and mobile communications as we know them today. The profiles had to fit within an outer ‘jacket’ or sleeve, which then had to be fitted within a further containment sleeve - all made by Copely Developments Ltd! All profiles had to be easily removed for adjustment and maintenance. We developed an extrusion line exclusively for this project, which was also used by The department of space research at The University of Padua in Italy. On successful completion of the project, we received public recognition within technical journals covering the project both at home and overseas! The CERN Project continues to this day!
